Artist of the month

Laurel Burch

During the month of November students studied the artwork of nationally famous artist and designer, Laurel Burch. Burch is a self-taught artist. She uses brilliant hues and wonderful patterns in her artwork. She is most famous for her patterned cats. She has expanded her designs onto tote bags, purses, coffee mugs, note cards, and clothing. A third grade student brought in a Laurel Burch pocketbook that had been given to her by her grandfather (before she knew who Laurel Burch was!) for the students to see.

Projects this month:

First grade: Laurel Burch patterned cat faces, construction paper scarecrows, Native American Thunderbird shields, and turkey roll sculptures.

Second grade: Laurel Burch cats on cardboard circles, pheasant drawings, fabric scarecrow drawings, contour drawing hand line designs.

Third grade: Laurel Burch cats using metallic crayons, bird on a branch drawings, and turkeys with “dressing”. (Student had to design a turkey wearing clothing.)

Fourth grade: Laurel Burch cats using glitter markers and metallic crayons, folded foil paper radial designs, oil pastel fall still life.

Fifth grade: Large Laurel Burch cats in oil pastel on 18x24 black paper, Indian corn resist painting using watercolors and oil pastel. Also, Mrs. Austin's 5th grade completed a line design unit during their art enrichment periods. We started drawing the designs in pencil, then graduated to turning those line design drawings into string art.
