Artist of the Month
Vincent Van Gogh
As part of the Visual Arts Program here at Davis Hill, students will be studying a different famous artist every month. September's Artist of the Month was Vincent Van Gogh. Students in grades K-5 produced wonderful works of art while looking at real sunflowers (provided by Kindergarten teacher Ms. Prouty). We looked at pictures of Van Gogh's painting, "Sunflowers", and then created our own. Every class tried a different media.....Kindergarten painted in watercolors, while 4th grade started drawing in oil pastels and finished with a watercolor wash on top. 5th grade worked with oil pastels on black construction paper. The results were beautiful!!
With fall fast approaching, there were also lots of leaf projects. 3rd grade created line design leaves-- focusing on contour drawing, and following the shapes of the leaves to create these wonderful designs. 2nd grade created a fall leaf watercolor wash painting. We started off with crayons and painted over the crayon with watercolors. The more water we used, the more the colors blended together and the results were fantastic!!
In the weeks that follow we will be focusing on another Van Gogh painting entitled Starry Night (one of my personal favorites). I hope that the start of your school year has been happy and productive so far--we have been very busy in the Art Room. I will continue to add to the Art website every month with more wonderful art work produced by your children.
Thanks to all parents who have sent in egg cartons, yogurt containers, plastic milk containers, and paper towel/toilet paper rolls. They will come in handy in up-coming projects!!!
If you have some time available, we are looking for parent volunteers to help out in the art room when first graders come in, Mondays through Thursdays at 2:30.
